What's on a county record, and where it comes from
- Probate office
- 109 counties. Name, address and phone of the probate office, confirmed on the court's own website in September 2026. Each record links to the page we checked.
- County courthouse
- 2,502 counties (1,262 with a street address). From OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL), matched to the county by its boundary.
- Phone numbers
- 326 counties. Only numbers published on the court's website or tagged in OpenStreetMap. Everywhere else the page says no number is published — we don't fill the gap.
- County website
- 3,044 counties. Official website from Wikidata (property P856, CC0) or the CISA .gov domain registry.
- State rules
- Small-estate limits, waiting periods, creditor deadlines, executor fees, handwritten wills and death taxes for 50 states and D.C., re-checked in September 2026 against statute text and court self-help pages. Sources are listed on every state page.
- Maps & population
- County boundaries and population: U.S. Census Bureau (public domain).
- Opening hours
- Not shown. No open, reliable source publishes them for most courts, and a wrong time is worse than none.
What changed in September 2026
An earlier version of this site showed a phone number, a ZIP code and identical opening hours for every county. Those values were generated, not sourced, and we removed all of them. We also corrected state rules that had changed or were wrong — for example new small-estate limits in Alabama, Illinois, South Carolina, Virginia, Montana and the Dakotas, and the 2026 estate-tax exemptions.
